They didn't though. They fired a guy for breaking a confidential agreement, he shared that google has a certain AI then added his own opnion that it is sentient.
Also it's funny how the schizo mind works. It only works in favor of the sensational side. After reading the chat between the dude and AI, anyone with brain should see that the google engineer was a delusional diversity hire because of how behaved the AI and how he talked to it.
Imagine you're training a neural network on a text data set you harvested from the internet. Will the trained network magically think of itself as a bot? No. Will it have any basic knowledge about its own self? No. It will be able to estimate how to complete sentences, that's all.
It took extra effort for a team of engineers to program the chat behavior. Looking at the idiot that claimed that the AI was sentient, an educated person can easily tell that the engineers were biased and shaped the AI into what they wished to see.
