Hesco 4401 is the go-to body armor for most people, or should be. Right now it goes for about $170/plate. Front and back plates, user, so $340. Don't be caught 'lackin' with no back plates just because it's heavy. 4401 is NIJ IV, AKA enough to stop one round of armor-piercing 30-06. It's more than enough to stop a round from an AR-15 or something chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO.
