i think the overwhelming majority of mechanical things that require service should be shipped in their equivalent parts and require enduser assembly.
in fact i'd support a stratified market where you can buy each individual part.
it - all in the end - goes to helping the enduser learn and be comfortable with what they've purchased.
3d printing should be used to manufacture machines capable of making metal components. e.g. molds, replica guides, plastic equivalents as instructions etc.
