Why wouldn’t you just compare it to the first winter war with Finland. Which was ultimately a Pyrrhic victory for the USSR. They got everything they wanted after Finland sued for peace but they lost a huge amount of personnel and equipment and the war exposed the sheer level of incompetence that tends to fester in a peace time army. How the hell is that a bad thing for the West? All Russia had going for itself since the collapse of the USSR was the perception they COULD be a threat to Europe militarily. This invasion has already exhausted and destroyed tons of material and men, and the economic situation doesn't seem to be going too well despite all these copes that Russia has turned itself into an autarkic nation in a matter of weeks.
