Everything is shit because no one is pushed to the brink of human experience anymore. Everyone is just passively consuming and following the pre-set autopilot of their lives. I'd argue there are more "sheep" today than there were in feudal Europe. No one truly cares about society degrading as long as they still have:
1. Food and water
2. Electricity
Once those are gone and people are starving and living without their dopamine pumps, people will turn to savagery.

With the advent rising of technology being implemented the way that it has the breaking point will be when regular people become mentally exhausted from being forcefully adapted into a system that isn't predisposed to natural autonomous functions required to not become mentally unstable.
We're seeing the beginnings of that now which is why the powers that be feel it necessary to create idealism based off of tech utopia. Problem for them is society as a whole is backsliding so hard they're failing at making anyone actually believe it would be wholly beneficial which is what (((their))) system would require.
