Nuance. The US’ fooled the world into thinking they had literal Doomsday weapons and could end the world with the push of a button. The weapons exists but are vastly exaggerated. Nuclear Winter is based off of flawed computer models from the late 1970’s that were quickly debunked but had already entered the public discourse. Roughly half of the archival footage of supposed nuclear blasts were faked to fool the Soviets, which doesn’t help credibility at all (why fake something that actually exists?). There are a lot of mysterious murders and suicides among people who worked in the Manhattan Project. The TNT towers were absolutely real.

The camera's where placed in mini bunkers, with inches of glass to protect them. In most of those shots the blast wave is moving away from the camera, meaning the lens (and the vulnerable mini bunker opening) was facing away from detonation.
