I just left my job to take off a couple months. Worked my ass off the last 2 years about 60 hours per week, never took a si k day, got raises, a promotion, and stellar feedback from everyone I dealt with. Issue is, only 1 week of paid vacation a year, and they expect you not to take off more than that even unpaid. Had to walk into my boss's office a week ago and basically say "hey, I know I'm your best man here, you just promoted me and you depend on me for a lot, but I have to put in my two weeks because I'm falling apart from the pace I've been going at."
Leaving on good terms with good references, and should be able to find another job in the industry when I'm ready to go back, especially with a reputation like mine, but it all could've just been avoided if the norm was a month off per year or so.
