based on what russian officials said (including putin), it's for sure that russia will take donbass + zaparozhia + kherson. no mention has been made of any other areas, at least not by high ranking people. the question is, what happens when russia has these territories but ukraine does not want to negotiate or settle for peace? russians can't just "wind down" unofficially by gradually reducing operations, because ukraine will just continue to attack/launch missiles and get further NATO support.
in the end they'd have to go for kiev again, there's no other way.

saw something similar in a russian intel post, holding LPR/DPR will not be enough to keep them safe from long range weapons. However, I think if russia can push up to the Dniepr and take Dnipro, then create a DMZ line all the way to Izyum. Between the southern DMZ and northern DMZ in Belarus, they can build some air bases and missle installations, put a bunch of nukes there and if Ukraine ever gets any other ideas, wipe them off the map.
And to your point about UKR forces, I heard 20% are trained military and 80% are conscripts. Add this to the point most national guards from the west wont fight for the East. Think its GG ukraine at this point.

Odessa is not a majority Russian city, and Putin made it very clear in recent statements he's not interested in taking Ukrainian people's territories. He knows that would be a waste of time since you'd just get a civil war. He just wants the Russian majority areas.

I honestly don't see a way around this either. To be sincere I don't think there is much to worry about. If NATO was going to do something, they would have done it already. Instead they give small gestures to the Ukraine that are ultimately meaningless and serve their own agendas.

I've spent a week in Odessa last september and I hear talking Ukrainian 3 times.. once by a soldier at the airport, once by a server in restaurant that clearly was not from Odessa and once by an agry old cashier lady.
Not saying Odessa would be happy to get invaded... but it's not as hostile as other cities. Same goes for Kharkov. Half of the people in those two cities can not speak proper Ukrainian.. and most likely have Russian relatives very close in their bloodlines.
That being said, all of my Odessa friends on IG are posting anti-russian content daily... so..
