I feel like the only people who are concerned about their “purpose” are bored lazy intuitives finding ways to over complexify and romanticize life in general. Also narcissists whose egos require their lives to have more (perceived) importance than being a welder, plumber or cook. Like they have to become a philanthropist or next great American writer in order to satisfy their insatiable need to be important or have a legacy.
We messed up somewhere along the way. If you asked your average man in the 1700s or 1800s or hell, even 1950s, about something as convoluted and vain as the idea of “purpose”, they’d scoff and walk away. I feel like as soon as it passed the point of living life to “survive” to the point of living for “purpose”, human consciousness had advanced too far. People are bored and not working but still retain the human need for struggle, so they find obstacles through the metaphysical like “purpose” since they no longer have to worry about the physical obstacles we had for hundreds of thousands of years, like hunger and mating.
Having “purpose” in life is not important and is just another self-help meme. Also If you think need self help you have way too much free time on your hands.

I think what OP is trying to say is that the people back in the day didn't think they were special, and yet they were way more charismatic, factually intelligent, and talented, and now a liberal for example talks on social media about politics but when you ask them what the 3 branches of government are or why our nation was founded, et cetera, they are completely ignorant.
