Do your research. There is no form of energy that has the density of hydrocarbon fuels (gas, diesel). Think of how much "work" you can do with 1 gallon of gas, compared to doing it with manpower alone. Chainsaw vs. hand axe. Driving a car 3 miles vs. pushing it by hand. And so on. Even at $5 gas is a bargain, containing something like 15-20 man-hours of work.
