I feel like in her attempt to give Gilead some sort of rational origin story she simply justified Gilead. The scale that she presents to us has on the one side the novel modernist conception of "women's rights" and on the other side the end of humanity, and the reader, and the characters, are expected to choose between these two things. Her whole point is that she, and womanhood in general we are to assume, would have humanity end so that the current living generation of women could be "free" in its final days. That is her message: Woman is the ultimate hedonistic nihilist.
