But yeah the primary thing is that in case of south ossetia it's a worthless piece of land with population of 50k people and a bumfuck town in the middle of nowhere. The reason why it is important is because Roki tunnel in it serves as the primary military tunnel from Russia to entire south and Russia views this as compromise to it's security in case if it needs war with Turkey for example in far future or something along those lines. This creates a situation in which Russia would not allow south ossetia to be in Georgia unless Georgia would be extremely tightly integrated with Russia like Belarus because if terrorial stability of Georgia is returned and later Georgia becomes enemy of Russia at any point in history Russia has lost land access through our side of mountains for their heavy machinery. It is actually in the interest of Russia to retain it as a permanent frozen conflict, as they've shown already they don't care about 50k random Ossetians voting to be in Russia and don't plan to actually integrate it into Russia instead it can be a permanent political pressure point.
