Alligators, crocs, bears, rattlesnakes, copperheads, mutant raccoons, hybrid possum/cupacabra, no running water, all roads are dirt, food is only roadkill, no clothing stores, twitter is banned statewide, internet is only on phone bc no service providers, 100% trump supporters, everyone is openly armed, we check license plates and are xenophobic, terrain unforgiving, summers: 109 degrees, winters: -20+, everyone here is a cop, capital punishment for schedule 2 narcotics, theres no weed and we only sell alcohol for 30 minutes on wednesday at 3pm.....you wouldnt like it. Plus, we are full.

It really is America's Afghanistan.
I was born and raised in WV and lived there for 25 of my 29 years of life. I've traveled to every US state, Canada, Mexico, UK/Ireland/Scotland, Germany, France, and spent a short weekend in Italy. Also I've visited Egypt for a few hours to see the pyramids.
WV is unquestionably one of the more gorgeous places I've ever seen. Mist and fog rolling down the mountains in the early morning, coalescing in the valleys suspending above the rivers. If you camp on the river you can literally wake up to dew drops slowly raining on you and a cloud of fog so thick that light stretches across its back, you think you could climb into heaven if you had a ladder.
Never met a person on the street that wasn't willing to hold a short, cordial conversation-- or wasn't willing to simply go about their day and leave you alone. Gas station clerks listen to old men prattle on about their lives as they play the scratch offs. Doors are held open in every store for the young and elderly and by the young and elderly.
Even the methheads and heroin addicts in WV have a better social understanding than the ones I've run into in major cities. And that has to do with how surrounded by nature everything else. Nowhere in WV are you more than a single mile on foot from a wooded area.
Charleston and Morgantown are the largest metro areas in the state, maybe Huntington is close, and they're all tree covered.
The only genuinely despicable people are the local cops and the thieves. And yet even if the whole community knows Such-and-Such stole from Mister Culver, nobody rats on them. But you damn sure know if anybody caught Such-and-Such in the act on their land he'd get shot in the heart and prayed over as the ambulance arrived.
There's legitimately not another place like true-blue Appalachia in all the world and WV is the truest Appalachian existence still around. I'm going to move back soon.
