Sugar consumption was much higher from the 50s until the 90s than after. While people were obese then, it really went out of control after that. Something else is to blame.

That said, you won't piss me off by restricting sugar. It's not a civil rights issue, just an economic freedom issue, and I'm no longer a libertarian as I was in childhood. As a libertarian socialist, I defend civil rights, but not really economic rights.
I eat tons of sugar, but banning added sugar would only trim "drive-by" calories in things that aren't intrinsically sweet. I'd still have my preferred delicacies.

Obese people don't generally /have/ impulse control deficits AFAIK. I think that the phenomenon of the level-headed fat guy may be one of the historic factors which privileged the genes of obesity throughout humanity's history of violence, corruption, and incompetence.
