Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose country has been conducting a military operation in Ukraine, hails the Russian military’s battleground performance versus the forces of the ex-Soviet republic.
“Our anti-aircraft systems are crunching them (Ukrainian weapons) like nuts. Dozens have been destroyed,” Putin said in an interview that was broadcast on Saturday, Russia’s RIA news agency reported.
>We are at a point when sanctions start to hurt our side... At first the sanctions were only difficult for Russia but now we are coming to a point when the sanctions are painful for our own countries, and now the question is how much pain are we willing to endure. It is different for different countries. The unity is very hard to keep. It is getting more and more difficult because of high inflation, and energy prices.”

Yes, it's 100% self-interest. Regardless of the (sad) state of Western politics, there are still international countries out there ready to defend their national interests and sovereignty at any cost (see Turkey, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Israel etc). And I do agree that the United States will, at some point, cave in and shower them with concessions because a multipolar world is very bad business for a military industrial complex that has focused all of its attention on getting rich by projecting power.
> They will definitely triple down because a part of them know how much they fucked up by rushing in with the sanctions and another part is so indoctrinated in their beliefs that they actually believe the official narrative that we can survive without any Russian export by the end of this year. It's politics run by emotions, the very type of politics that have brought countless of empires to their knees over the course of history.
> They don't see Russia as "imperialistic" as the United States and they also respect the Russian mindset of Business-doing aka strongmen taking decisions on the spot as opposed to endless red tapes and tenders that have to be approved by endless boards and directors. The Russians (and Eastern Europeans for that matter), believe it or not, are more culturally aligned with the Middle Easterners than Westerners.
