At my previous job, I had to be in the office for the normal 9-5 hours, but then I also had to be on call 24/7. It was a shitty situation. I'm still in the same industry, but moved to the public sector from the private, and the quality of life improvement is amazing. I'd never go back to private sector unless they offered to more than double my salary, and even then I'd probably take the work/life balance over the money.

It wasn't. This legislation requires your employer to say "yes/no we will/wont contact you, you are/aren't required to answer."
This legislation basically requires that all employees are required to be on call, because before no one had codified policy and the MOL considered emails/calls to be work. Now with the new legislation unpaid calls/emails are on the table for EVERY employer.
Tldr before this your employer couldn't require shit outside of work hours, now every single employee in the province will be on call and answering emails unpaid.
