It was an excuse to reorganize our military into a smaller more specialized force that doesn't answer to the public. Iraq war was the old guard and Afghanistan was the newer way of waging international conflict. In short it was a struggle for how we would wage war in the future. Both kind of lost.

They had intel that shit was going to go down and for whatever reason they chose not to take it seriously. Maybe it was for profit, maybe they didn't believe some arabs in turbans had the capacity to pull off such a complex logistical operation.
