The Normandy landings were actually fairly tame as far as operations went. Iwo Jima was far worse.
The weather conditions were perfect for the defenders, as it was crystal clear. The terrain of the island made establishing a secure beachhead very difficult. And worst, the Japanese lured the Americans in to a trap, and then unleashed a concentrated artillery bombardment and machine gun fire assault, resulting in about 2,500 American casualties.

In the month long fighting on the island 7,000 U.S. Marines were killed. Another 20,000 were wounded. For comparision D-day lasted over two months with numbers around 10,000, with 4,414 confirmed dead.
To this day Iwo Jima remains the battle with the highest losses in Marine Corps history.
