Main reason is foreign powrs have dominated the area for so long, like germans, turks, greeks, the papacy, franks, hungarians etc. This breeds a very irredentist ideology with the people there, because they've been constantly fighting for independence, and most of the time when there is some serbian, croat, albanian, or bosniak state they still have large portions of their ethnicity living outside the state's/kingdoms border. The germans, english, french, italians etc, rarely have to experience this or think in a way where they must consistently fight for freedom or liberation of their people from land outside of their independent area.
This is also exacerbated with bosniaks becoming a thing from ottoman conversation, complicating the balkans by a lot. As well as muslim albanian migration into serbia, guided by the turks, which obviously creates kosovo
I guess the small mercy of the EU open door policy and emigration is that you'll lose the ones who don't care, keep the ones who really do and get back the second-generation who see a bunch of cheap shitholes to visit and invest in.
I think in the demographics war the Serbs and Croats win anyway, and without Bosnia existing most of the problems are solved.

Kind of but austria is a lot like eastern germany in that a lot of them have slavic ancestry. Austria was inhabited by the karantanians mostly, who are the predecessors of the slovenians. So a mixture of slovenes being germanified, and austrians being slavicised. And the EU don't have an open door policy. It's a lot easier to migrate to the EU if you're educated, which is why there is brain drain all over the balkans. Which is even worse in croatia because of them being a part of the EU, making it easier to migrate

No. If republika srpska becomes independent then it would unify with serbia after a week or something. But that doesn't exist as a country at the moment, and it might not even need to be its own country to secede to serbia
