Your educational system, really all modern education, was invented by Prussians. Who were equally Russian and German. If you were raised in east germany, it was no different than being raised in russia at the same time. The cold war had a huge effect on the economy and communist brainwashing had a huge effect on the population's psyche. The only reason germany has prospered was because the US rebuilt and funded your country for decades, and banned you from having a military. So you spent your funds elsewhere. Meanwhile russia was locked in a new war with the US for four decades and they had to spend their money on military until they lost because they went broke.
On another note, Russia and Germany lost huge numbers of fathers. Much of Russia's problems come from multiple generations of fatherless children being raised by resentful mothers. Yet Russia still managed to retain some semblance of a groundwork of traditional morality and gender roles into the 21st century. Meanwhile, the germans go around having gay sex in clubs starting at age 14 and live in a society that pushes communist talking points, speech and gun laws harder than Russia does today.
I wouldn't want to visit either country. They both suck. But you had a half century of privileges in foreign relations that russians did not.
Russians are the original frontierists. Far eastern russia resembles the american wild west's early days, economically. but with 10x the distances over land that's nearly impenetrable and one of the most difficult places to survive on earth. Russians did it, while germans couldn't even make it to moscow intact.

ukraine is and has been a nightmare state on par or worse than russia in every metric since the collapse of the USSR. The corruption is worse and so is the brainwashing. To think Ukraine is some panacea of democracy in the region is just naive and absurd. Their resistance to russian reconquest has more to do with US meddling than with the population's own wishes or desires.
I say this as an american born, russian jew, who's entire family is from ukraine. I do not support or sympathize with the ukrainians any more than i do with russians. they are both suffering tremendously under corrupt leadership that has been further corrupted by international meddling.

I also think that putin is underestimated in regards of keeping this chaos in somewhat of a control. Still, all they do is to annoy people since solid, what actually? 100 years at least. Their history is a straightforward catastrophy. This is not our fault, so why should we care despising them; not saying that it is the fault "of the russian soul" or whatevs. Maybe it really is just geographics!

Larger landmass, smaller population, rougher terrain, etc. It takes time to conquer that much space, especially when its either muddy or frozen 10 months a year. Only a small percentage of americans were true frontierists and likewise with russia. Most people die when they go east, the land is absolutely unforgiving. Its not a german black forest where things are easy and food is plentiful.
