Monkeypox General
Current number of infections: 971

>What is monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a virus similar to smallpox. There is West African monkeypox and Central African monkeypox - the current outbreak is West African, the Central African monkeypox is much more serious and deadly. The virus has been endemic to Africa for decades, with increasing cases recently (as high as 18,000 cases total in recent years)

>Will monkeypox kill me?
No, very low probability. No deaths have occurred so far during this outbreak, as of June 4th, 2022.
Historically, West African monkeypox has a fatality rate ranging from 1 to 6% (these estimates vary)
So far, this outbreak is presenting differently than typical monkeypox - it does not seem to have the historic fatality rate.
For reference, chickenpox has a fatality rate of ~1 per 100,000 in children (0.001%) and ~21 per 100,000 in adults (0.021%); a fatality rate of even 1% would make it 1000x more deadly than chickenpox

>How does monkeypox present?
Historically, monkeypox has presented as large spots / rash, that turn to blisters, that turn to pustules, that scab over - when these scabs heal the person is no longer contagious. Historically, monkeypox presented with blisters on the face, arms, hands, chest, groin. This current monkeypox outbreak appears to be presenting slightly differently - it seems to be more limited to the groin, with the sores looking more like a spider bite than huge pustules. However, many are still presenting with blisters on their arms. Symptoms of monkeypox are similar to the flu - chills, fatigue, fever, headache, etc.

>What are the treatments for monkeypox?
Currently there is an antiviral treatment produced by SIGA technologies (TPOXX), there is also a smallpox vaccine produced by Bavarian Nordic to be given to those at high risk / close contact to those infected. There are other treatments recently receiving patents, but as of now, these are the two main treatments.

>Are they going to try make me get the vaccine for monkeypox?
Highly, highly unlikely. The smallpox vaccine is very harmful with a lot of risks - on a mass scale it would cause huge complications. Governments and health bodies are very vocal about not wanting to vaccinate for smallpox unless absolutely necessary. If the outbreak became massive or if the virus mutated and became more deadly, this could change.

SHILL THREAD

MONKEYPOZ = VAIDS

what am I shilling?

Where are all of the pictures? I'm not talking about stock photos from Google or Africans with a range of diseases that affect the skin. Surely, one of these 750+ queens has a social media account. Do we think gays are suddenly too modest to share pictures of their pox for internet points?

Fear and bullshit about a fake disease that will be instrumentalized to push agendas just like the memeflu.

I think on the contrary I am "shilling" to not be afraid of it

Highly, highly unlikely. The smallpox vaccine is very harmful
>the current outbreak is West African, the Central African monkeypox is much more serious and deadly
>there is an antiviral treatment

>Highly, highly unlikely. The smallpox vaccine is very harmful

But wasn't smallpox vaccine mandatory till 1980 in many countries? I know that there were many complications, but they did this in XX century, so why not now too?
Besides, can't they just lie and present new vaccines and tell people those new vaccines are super safe? I think that's was the purpose of covid-19 vaccines, I think they were basically safe, and now they gonna push really harmful vaccines as for normies it become normal thing to take multiple shoots per year.

wtf pop those mfers and fill them with iodine stat!

Yes - it was mandatory because smallpox was even more deadly, more contagious, where the rewards outweighed the risks
Smallpox could have a fatality rate ~30% and an infection rate of ~60%
Monkeypox could have a fatality rate closer to 1% (so far 0%) and an infection rate closer to 30%, so it isn't worth the risks / cost
For the same reason we don't mass vaccinate for chickenpox

It only spreads though sexual contact, something which Any Forumstards are alien to

Happy Pride Month!

Gay pride month, a.k.a anus month.
Its going to be Monkeypox haven after this month.

Got anything else besides this one? It's been three weeks now and this is the only pic the shills that can come up with. Are we sure that isn't herpes or something else?

>For the same reason we don't mass vaccinate for chickenpox

That's interesting, because vaccination for chickenpox is mandatory in Poland. I think it's the only vaccination that makes a big mark on the arm skin, and everybody here have it.

Also, mortality rate is one thing, but in todays world there are so many vain people, that will rather take vaccine than be affraid of scars after monkeypox.

So it has 3-6 times greater chance of killing you than the virus that shut down the whole world for 2 years, but it "won't kill you"

the difference is the transmissibility
it is possible for someone to contract smallpox or monkeypox from air droplets, but it is a lot less common than other viral diseases - one study I looked at said that if you spent 16 hours in a patients room with no protection you would have a 60% chance of contracting it
whereas through physical contact of the person or things they have touched the spread is much greater
the real problem with covid is that someone could have had it, gone into a room, coughed, and then hours later someone else could go into that room and catch it
the infection rate is so much lower than covid that there is a 0% chance of the hospitals becoming overwhelmed

Why would that simulation use monekeypox as a virus able to infect half the people on the planet if it has a low transmissibility?
