a simple sandwich that is 95% bread, like a single thin slice of ham in a big loaf of bread.
When people brought their lunch it was usually bread with liver paste or cheese in a tube with a thin slice of ham.

I don't remember ever having school lunches served like that in Italy.
But it's true, first we were served pasta usually and then some kind of protein (usually pork or salmon) and then a piece of fruit.
We paid like 5€ for it though.

I went to a private school in the US and the food wasn’t much better than the crap shown in the picture. They would get a little carton of milk, slimy canned fruit, and the “main” was usually frozen nuggets or some other shit that was pure carbs. They looked forward to pizza day when they would get a microwaved rectangle with a layer of sugary tomato sauce and processed cheese.
