Cheaper, more efficient, more effective. Take Las Vegas for example. The city only has a million people. You have to travel longer than the entire length of Ireland before you hit another city. Fuck, you have to travel the entire length of Ireland before you exit the desert. If you tried to build a train there, where would it go? What route would it take? What would be the stops? How long would it be? It gets up to 120 degrees in Las Vegas, exactly how long do you want people to walk on foot for? How long should they wait at the stop in 120 degree weather? The roads are faster. You might be able to make an intercity route between vegas and los angeles, as theres already a train route there. The problem with this is that the cost is not worth the investment. It would cost over 100 billion to build a modern high speed rail between Vegas and los angeles. Amtrak does not make anywhere close to that amount for that route, and that route in particular is a cross continental route from chicago. It's a 3 and a half day train ride going from chicago to los angeles.
Then take ireland. Dozens of large cities, tons of normal sized ones in between the large cities, crowded as fuck, tiny little piece of land. You have to stack people in towers just so they fit. Trains are not a luxury, they are a consequence of density. They are used out of necessity alone and the US, barring the northeastern region, has little to no use for trains.

Tired of people using this as an excuse. The NYC subway and the trains that lead to the city are fine most of the time. You get the odd character or the violent criminal every so often, but it's just as common outside of the train.
The problem is density. Why would you invest billions of dollars for a train that would serve almost nobody? Why would they take a train to begin with? In most of the US, regardless of how this train system is managed, you would have to drive to the train station anyway. Why not just drive a little further to your destination? Walking is out of the question. Most people live in subdivisions or rural areas because the US has land in abundance. Some people own land larger than some European countries. You expect the guy to walk an entire countrys worth of distance just to get off his own property, then walk even more to the train station? With a car he'd be there and back before the walking version got off the property. Take the same concept, make it a little less extreme, then apply it to how spread out subdivisions and rural areas are. If you have just 20 people on a street, but each of those 20 people own just 10 acres of land, how far are you going to have to walk just to get to the next street? How would a train service them at all? You going to build stops right outside each of their properties? How long do you think that trip would take especially when compared to a car? Whats more, many US states do not have central population centers. Everyone is going to a different destination. What if you had an entire state that was basically exactly this scenario? Say, Wyoming.

Wyoming is the same size as the UK, but the UK has 13,000% more people. In London you need to have guys who cram people into the cars to make sure commuters make it to work on time. Could wyoming even offer enough business to keep the train solvent? Honestly. Consider that in wyoming the livestock vastly outnumber the people, and most of the state is wilderness. Most of the US is wilderness really. If it wasnt for roads you would be able to tell more easily. You ever driven around say Louisiana and realized that you havent seen anything resembling civilization outside of the road and the billboards for about 80 miles? Just swamps and trees.
