But it came up in some convo and i told him that i would hate to travel there because of how shitty the city was and he goes "Everything you read on the internet is negative" and "Im sure its a very fine city" and "Im sure the Downtown is a very cultured place" Is he right or just retarded?

The homeless situation is completely out of control and most drugs have been decriminalized resulting in an exponential rise in said homeless problem. There are flash roadblocks every few months or so where people in black bloc make white drivers turn back on certain roads. Literally aiming AK47s at them, police don't do anything serious. Some of it is nice, the trails and nature is certainly beautiful.
The neighborhoods are beautiful.
But there are tents and stumbling zombies in downtown, and the actual people who work in the restaurants and shops are pozzed beyond belief.
Living in the far suburbs is quite based though, especially over the river in Vancouver WA.

homeless/traveler user here. I traveled the west coast for a long time and never stopped in portland any longer than it took to gtfo. The type of 'traveler' people aka rich antifa kids you meet from there while you're in Seattle, SF, Eugene etc are reason enough to turn you off from going if you're a real hitchhiking traveling bum etc and not just trying to get fucked off shooting heroin in the streets of portland but when you're passing through it's so fucking grimy and you don't want to actually connect with anyone there
Lotta really fucked up shit happens particularly downtown, I heard a story of a travelling hippy type girl going to the bathroom at the portajohns near the river park and almost getting kidnapped. Town is a giant fucking chopshop for stolen things all over Oregon and Washington, shares a lot of grimy human trafficking ambiance crew type companies with Eugene and Seattle. It's a fucking mess. Shame because despite all the bullshit the northwest is still very nice to look at, like California.
