Ukraine wants to choose it's own future as a sovereign country and integrate more with Europe instead of historic integration with Russia, similar to the path Baltic States took and which has proven to be economically really beneficial.
Russia however considers Ukraine as basically a rebellious breakaway province of the Empire and views this as betrayal. Also it sees this change as a threat as Ukraine is almost 1/3 or Russia in population and would provide a strong ally for the West Russia considers it's main adversary. So Russia tried to take preventive actions against Ukraine joining their opponents, luckily it's been rather unsuccessful though.
