The construction was stopped for decades and the original blueprints were destroyed by anarchists. It's also a purely private endeavor so the construction needs to gather a shitton of funds to keep going, and so it does at the pace it can, it's better that it takes its time and it ends good than being rushed. I think everyone here has a love-hate relationship with it, the exterior doesn't seem very pretty sometimes, due to the different coloration of the facade due to not being able to get more of the original stone, but in person looks much better. The interior is stunning though and it's really the best part.
