There were no mistakes, shock and awe with fast movements would work if war of attrition to weaken Russia wasn't the goal of nato from the start. Limiting loses and expenses even if it means slow progress is the smartest move on Russian side.

One of the reasons breakthroughs worked so effectively in WW2 is because surveillance was terrible and sending messages to appropriate task forces was difficult, slow, and sometimes impossible. A breakthrough could travel a hundred kilometers into enemy territory before anyone on the other side even realized it was happening.

It's not the case in modern warfare. You can't easily breakthrough anymore because UAV, satellite, and electronic surveillance in general, can see where you're attacking and generals can very quickly redirect the necessary manpower to thwart it. Tanks and mechanized troops are simply too slow to breakthrough and exploit in modern war and defense in depth strategies ensure that even when a breakthrough occurs you have troops ready to immediately respond to it.

So we are reverting back somewhat to WW1 with fairly static defensive lines, except unlike WW1, the artillery is far longer ranged, accurate, and deadlier. It's becoming a UAV + Artillery war, and this is very close to what a lot of people have been predicting. Why would you arm soldiers with rifles to ineffectually shoot targets at 300 meters when you can give them a portable mortar, an all terrain vehicle, and a UAV and just have them bomb any enemy infantry they find within 10km of themselves?

That's not to say the small arms are totally useless, but it's basically the case that throwing rocks at each other is more automated, accurate, and longer range than it used to be.
