Worked for nasa for a few years on jwst. They're pretty pozzed. There's a massive power gap in skills between the last remaining greybeards and all the new kids. Since they no longer offer a pension and the pay is shit nobody good bothers working there anymore.
They're transitioning (heh) to pretty much just being administrators who only oversee contracted out work. This might be for the best as anything NASA does in house takes 3 times as long and costs 3 times as much as it should. It'd say it's a good thing that their focus is shifting to enabling industry, but since they're part of the fed gov most of the money is eventually going to end up on research grants for bottom surgery in space, etc.
