There will never be a confiscation. They will slowly but progressively increase the hurdles to gun ownership though shit like increased paperwork and background check scope, while also continuing to change the culture regarding guns in the US.
As of last year, polls showed that almost 70% of Americans favored stronger gun control, over 50% favored an "assault weapons" ban and over 40% favored a full handgun ban.
These numbers will continue to increase as the media continues its lopsided reporting of gun crime, the population of the us further trends to nonwhite immigration without the same cultural values that favor gun ownership, and the decline of fathers in the home.
The time will come when they get enough of the population on board with bans and heavy regulation. When that happens, 99% of people will comply, just like they do with the current unconstitutional gun laws.
It's a hard an inconvenient truth, but barring a radical and highly unlikely change to the current trajectory of American politics and society, you will see the end of private firearms ownership in your lifetime.

Finally even farming communes will have mandatory bybacks. It happens gradually over time. Most people participate in the mandatory buyback because they dont want trouble, they want their drivers license, they want to be able to go to work and feed their family. The few in big cities who refuse are treated as terrorists, and it goes slowly enough so they can bring 200 national guard to ventilate one guy. Then they move onto smaller cities.
