GDP is a meme. It views doing more with less as economic contraction.
Inflation literally inflates the GDP (because prices are greater and people have to spend more to meet their needs and fulfil their wants) and deflation literally deflates the GDP because people can afford to save more and need to spend less to fulfil their wants and meet their needs. So less money exchanges hands over the course of a year.
GDP measures the amount of money exchanging hands over the course of a year. Not the amount of actual, real wealth produced and consumed. Money is not wealth. Money is only a claim on wealth, and only that wealth which is available for sale in it (you can't use a French Franc to buy anything anymore because nothing is sold for French Francs anymore).
