I spend about 1400 bucks a year on average. Most of this is literally taxes and my rather expensive internet, which is slow.
I make my own ethanol and dilute gas with it.
I cook with my own biogas.
I do not live on a grid. I bathe in a cold creek, and I pay about 500 bucks a year on taxes. Life has literally never been better. And I've lived in some very nice places and had some pretty cool jobs.
I grow my own food, I raise my own chickens, I shoot coyotes that get too close. I even make a lot of my own clothes out of hemp fibers.
