Hi guys, I recently accepted a teaching job at a 60% black, 40% Latino elementary school in inner city Houston starting next school year (August 1st.)
What can I expect? Will it be an easy job since the expectations are so low?

You are going to face some students that are uncontrollable, obnoxious, and disruptive. You also can't threaten them with parent-teacher conferences because the behavior the kid displays matches what is taught at home. The key thing is not to struggle with the bad kids, but concentrate on those that want to learn.

I have received a job teaching at in a Southern city.
It is 40% White (ranging from Middle class to Upper middle class), 30% Black 20% Latino.
Should I take it? No indication has been given on if I'm teaching Honors classes or grade level classes, but I won't be teaching AP

Have clearly defined 'lines in the sand' that they are not allowed to cross. Make the content the interesting stuff, not yourself. Start off miserable and stringent and ease up over the course of the year. The unfortunate thing with inner city schools is there is never consistency. The staff come in and out like a revolving door, single parent homes are the norm, admin is usually young and ineffective, and the rest of your coworkers will probably be undoing any progress you make with your students. The students will crave consistency, and even though they will fight you on it in the beginning, they will come around in the first month or two. Good luck, things become really enjoyable once you set the expectations.

Its going to suck. And you'll quit quickly. You'll probably experience a period of crisis where you realize that teaching is absolutely not for you (but that you banked on it being your line of work). Then you'll get some shit job making shit money for a few years until you figure something better out.

any school thats more than 10% black or so is going to be soul crushingly horrible, even at the elementary level. also keep in mind most of those kids are already openly racist and hostile, and haven't yet learned to hide their contempt for authority when it's suitable. anyway have fun, im sure it will turn out just like one of those disney movies where the white savior just has to bend over backwards for a few months to show the blacks how much he loves them before he can start teaching them the elementary concepts that they're 4 years behind on.

I taught a a course at the kipp school in Houston for the gifted kids there. Your going to want to last at least the entire year. I recommend getting on Xanax for that year and then weaning off and teaching somewhere else next year. If you don’t get on Xanax you will quit.
