I've studied this passage for a long time, and it's a very interesting one. The entire thing says as such:

This means we should be respectful of the superior authorities, so long as they have the moral authority to rule over us, as God set them as temporary rulers over us, so we wouldn't fall into anarchy and chaos. Like if there's a speed limit on a road, a good christian would follow it because there's moral and practical justification for it. Even taxes, which have become somewhat burdensome, still serve a purpose if you use any government services like roads or a mail system or even house utilities dependent on government infrastructure.
Where it gets slightly muddled is when immorality creeps into the law. It is written in the bible that we are to flee from immorality. We're not to follow or obey it, but we must flee from it as if it was a detestable thing. What happens when the law is compromised by immorality? I've asked many christian family members about this, and they usually give me the same answer.
