I once read an interesting scholarly article on the earliest technologies and they turn out to be clothing and shoes. Aside from food and weapons and shelter clothes and shoes protect your skin. Shoes in particular prolong your life beyond say 24 and will get a prehistoric homonid up to 35 and maybe even 40 years old. Puncturing your food with say some sharp rocks or large cacti thorns is actually really deadly, a serious hazard of mortality even if you're a lion.
