India never is going to be China but I believe we'll grow at 6-7% average annually for the next few decades even without export trade(on which we are far less dependent than China is). It won't be as fast but eventually we'll get to middle income status at least. There's a reason Japan invests so much here.

One word: War. Since independence India was forced to engage in war, forced to spend on its army and defence over development. China has largely had no wars since 1979, while India’s last full scale war was in 1999, with multiple insurgencies across the early 2000s. India’s spending on defence as a percent of GDP is still higher than China’s. The Indian economic boom is very recent, starting in the 2010s. 10 years ago, India wasn’t even in the top 10 economies.
