Vestigial psychology. They come from a place where rulers exist. Queens, dictators. America doesnt, or at least it's not supposed to have rulers. It has political leaders. We never had homeless people to begin with, and yet we have them.... because it's ultimately up to them whether they want to use the govt benefits in a responsible manner or not. If they go out of their way to do drugs and/or shit up the apartment they will naturally have to live without. So, it's entirely up to you.

The US has a truncated right, not a truncated left. The reason this results in the apparent paradox of US leftists getting fewer of the things they claim to want than European leftists is because politics is about compromise, and its harder for leftists in the US to get those things in a compromise with neoliberals than it is for European leftists to get those things in a compromise with nationalists.

What do leftists and neoliberals align on?

Notice that this is precisely the US status quo. This is what the US gets because this is the natural synthesis of a left - neoliberal compromise, and since the US has a truncated right, a left - neoliberal compromise is the only compromise that is possible. In Europe the left can choose to circumvent neoliberal demands by compromising with nationalists instead (although as US leftist culture gains traction here, they will become less willing to do this). They can also threaten to compromise with nationalists in order to negotiate better terms in a left - neoliberal coalition. The fact that Europe still has an intact far right culture is precisely what allows European leftists to get the things US leftists seethe about not having, because it frees them from the need to compromise with neoliberals.
