The common pattern among countries with low and/or plummeting birth rates is that they're heavily urbanized. In a rural environment children are beneficial because they're a source of free labor, but in a city they're only a liability until they're at least 18 (more realistically 25 lol). I think this is the primary factor behind the decline. Next you have the problem of women joining the workforce instead of getting pregnant and raising children. Add to this the fact that we've got a lot more social mobility than our ancestors a few centuries back did and you get the vast majority of people trying to climb the socioeconomic ladder, minimizing expenses such as children while they're at it. This is especially true of educated professionals who expect their children to attain their level of income and living standards at the very least. That's a lot of money spent on their education. This isn't even a problem specific to First World countries anymore. Apart from Africa and a few Asian nations, birth rates are down everywhere. Even in the former parts of the world the trend has been downwards for a long time now. There will soon be a scarcity of immigrants rather than the constant flood we've seen these past decades.
If this trend continues we will see urban society, industrial production and all the other phenomena of modernity collapse due to a shortage of people. I can't see replacement rates coming back until we see a massive switch back to agriculture. Neither capitalism in its current form nor its competitors such as communism, market socialism and whatever else there is out there could remain at this point as they all require growth (or at least the promise of it) to function. We'd probably end up with either a very rigid and low growth version of capitalism or maybe a modern kind of feudalism instead (or a mix of both).

The problem with removing women from the workforce is that it would need to be a global consensus. If you don't have that then whoever removes half their workforce is at a competitive disadvantage. Getting women educated and into the workforce is an internationally recognized method of "fighting overpopulation" aka reducing birthrates. Educated empowered working women generally don't have babies.
