They were earning each other to watch their backblast, they were aware how close they were and did it on purpose.
Disabling an apc is the same as destroying one, probably even worse because then they have to waste logistics, money, and time recovering and repairing. Just like incapacitating a soldier is just as good as killing him because it takes up another soldiers time keeping him alive and out of the fight.
