This specific kid is low IQ, had a fucked upbringing (i believe at least one of his parents was dead, the other absent, raised by grandparent/uncle or something), and worked wage slave job with no future as said. He was raised without good empathy, but this isn't seen across all shooters.

Interests. Most have a deep affinity for guns, and thus a desire to shoot it. Because of their rejection from society, their desire to be noticed takes hold in an act where they can live out an adrenaline-inducing rampage that usually gets them killed. Most who get taken alive i think really expected to die, or wanted to, but survival instinct forces them to surrender.
