A van is too small but I've been living out of an RV for about 6 months now and it's pretty great. There is nothing a modern apartment has that I don't have, and I can just drive my house from beautiful spot to beautiful spot. Van life is just a hipster cope for the rising home prices. If homes were cheaper in places with decent employment no one would do this shit. Living in an RV should not be described as “cheap”, it should be described as essentially free. A decent RV costs nearly as much as a house did 60 years ago. They used to be so affordable anyone could just buy one. Same with a boat. It was something you used for leisure in addition to your home, you weren’t forced to live like a fucking gypsy to avoid bills.

Just like reality television, what you see is largely staged and heavily produced. I'm sure you get nice moments here and there, but much is just traveling and then sitting. They have to drum up 'interesting' encounters or no one would watch for long.

Those vans can also be very expensive and it really helps if you're handy for mechanical and electrical issues. They typically have a lot of issues when purchased second-hand, as they don't generally take wear well.
