Schizophrenia has a wide range of symptoms because its generally caused by a fungus. Theres 50 different types of chungus that get into the brain and cause psychotic symptoms. The only disease before the 1950s associated with hearing voices was alcoholism listed in DSM 2 and 1.

People go periodically psychotic because the infection has a breeding cycle in the brain. People are susceptible to different fungi because its allowed in by different herpes viruses.
