They don't care about the model itself, they want to remove as many rifles as possible from American homes and banning AR-15's is the easiest way to do that.
There are rifles that fire the same rounds as an AR-15, fire just as fast as an AR-15, can hold as many rounds as an AR-15, but they're not as common.

The roller delayed blowback in the G3 and the CETME comes from the STG-45 which never got out of the prototype phase. The STG-44 was long stroke gas operated tilting bolt.
