Europeans have the opportunity to also pay for private healthcare if they choose so. It is a bit more expensive but not so expensive you'd go bankrupt for it. The going rate for a day in the hospital regardless of reason for admission is around 40€, in the private sector you will at most expect to pay 4000€ for some major complicated surgery, of which the state still pays its share
