no one is going to call a semi automatic rifle a semi automatic rifle. it's easier to say assault rifle because automatic rifle and assault rifle are redundant terms. it's been colloquially decided to use assault rifle to instead mean any and all rifles capable of automatic fire with a high capacity. so an AR can become automatic once modified as its base blueprint is based off one. a hunting rifle cannot even if you modify it to shoot 5 times quickly, as you'd need an entirely new base to create a high capacity automatic gun which you would then no longer have anything resembling a hunting rifle.
