Unknown. Most probable theory is that Russia was operating on shit intel and the assumption was Ukraine will fold like France in ww2. That's why you got the 30km convoys standing there pounding sand mostly unmolested, literal drives past towns and AFU positions and so on. They assumed Zelensky will surrender early on.

It was an attempt to end the war quickly.
Option 1 - land ppl at Kiev airport and bring more ppl in behind them, take over TV station, announce you won on air (didn't work)
Option 2 - surround Kiev, Ukrops freak out and surrender (didn't work bcos supply problems)
Both attempts to end the thing very quickly, which failed. Not clear they had properly planned for the long slow version but they finally got their shit together.

Ukraine could have actually collapsed in Kiev offensive. remember Israel hinted Zelensky he should surrender. Russia could not be prepared to NATO involvement in this war, and to EU blowing their economy to attack Russia. The West went suicidal and that´s difficult to predict.

Watch The New Atlas military report :) At 25:00 he explains the north campaign too with the encircling of Kiev. It was a high risk/high reward offence with the low success rate but trying it helped to took the other cities because it pinned many of the Ukrainian troops in Kiev.
I think it had several goals. The first goal was a "tactical feint", as you said. A secondary goal was the potential for a quick capitulation on Donbass, ending the war. I also suspect it was there to probe Kiev's defenses to see if an occupation was possible, but I think they learned early it wasn't and just parked outside until the Donbass offensive began.
This analysis is perfectly relatable to the situation that the Russians had during the Great Northern War. Despite getting BTFO'd hard during the battle of Narva they literally made an herculean effort to get their shit together with Peter the Great reforming the russian army gradually (levee en masse)gradually winning battles as a result - with bitter odds during the middle and later phases of the war. Its highly unlikely that the Russians would literally just slack off and be disheartened after having lost the first phases of the war and it would just embolden them more for revenge eventually out soon.

That’s the first muscle flexing before the real war start. Russian came in light but fast at Kiev, hoping for Zelensky to fold and sign the peace agreement in order to avoid more bloodshed. Zelensky was about to do so but Britain and the US prevented him. Now it’s and Russia withdrawn in order to do it properly.
