There's a pretty interesting potential balkanization scenario in pic related. Basically
>entire western coast joins the "Rim States", which is basically cyberpunk
>center of the country becomes "Jesusland", backwards authoritarian theocracy
>east coast integrates with the EU under the administration of the UN

Firstly, all maps with over 25 different regions are retarded. Many states would rather group together than break apart. Secondly, mountains and deserts are natural boundaries. It doesn't matter if you have cars; no state will send Nat Guard across them to conquer territory, especially in the case of California, which is losing water rapidly; they would have to control their own region first and foremost. California is likely to push north for resources than into a fucking desert. Thirdly, Eastern states would put aside their differences and form a conglomerate following the Appalachian Mountain. Any liberal states caught in the "fly-over" region are fucked and would live as wastelands for years. Natural barricades would be restored as militaristic civilians attempt to take their own land. In the long run, they probably would be very successful, but the civilians that supported them would memorialize these individuals. Finally, expect a black exodus in a similar form to the Trail of Tears; however, they will never be given Georgia or Louisiana because those states are too valuable; expect blacks to be sent towards Florida or the North East.
