The Home Office wants to place up to 1,500 male asylum seekers at Linton-on-Ouse near York. Residents have flooded the prime minster and home secretary with dozens of letters opposing the proposal. The government previously said the centre would help towards saving £4.7m in hotel costs. Locals encouraged "villagers of all ages" to join a "vigorous campaign" against the plans, which they said were announced without warning. Yes, British information on "The Troubles" is extremely warped. It was far, far, far more than just an IRA chimpout. Several key things to always remember regardless of what anyone on any side says: >Irish Republicans killed over 700 civilians >Ulster Loyalists killed over 800 civilians >British security forces killed over 180 civilians Every belligerent has blood on their hands. Most of the killing was carried out by paramilitary groups-however the British Security forces regularly colluded with Ulster Loyalists. The key thing to remember is simply that no side can really claim a "moral high ground", as they all killed or maimed a lot of innocent people.
The conflict started because of Loyalist opposition to the Civil Rights movement; people called for reform to make NI more democratic and less oppressive to Irish Catholics. Loyalist attacks on these demonstrations lead to riots. Loyalist paramilitaries formed, and riots intensified. British army got called in. Then the IRA got involved. The outcome was broadly a win for the Civil Rights movement and for Irish Nationalists, a loss for Ulster Loyalists, and a status-quo (but significantly worse) for the British government. It's a fascinating albeit harrowing topic. I'm an Irish Republican, so of course I have my own opinions, but my #1 message to any Brit looking to study the Troubles is to not let anyone-Irish or British-try and claim any one combatant as the "good guys" because they're probably being retarded.
