Basically shows Ukraine's original borders vs territories which were given for Ukraine to temporary control for convince (since Ukraine was part of Russian Empire / USSR it was easier to manage those territories as part of Ukraine). For instance Crimea was "gifted" because it wasn't connected to mainland Russia via land. But since Ukraine was part of USSR it wasn't big deal at the time. Same for other Ukrainian territories, which were all given under temporary control to Ukraine by either Russian Tsars, Temporary Government, or Bolsheviks.

I mean the only counterargument you can make, is that so much historic land was given to Ukraine, that it is Ukraine that is REAL Russia now (descendant of Kievan Rus), and Moscovites are basically some mongol imposters who're trying to appropriate Ukraine's history. There's no such thing as "Ukraine" without "Kyiv". But "Kiev" is also birth centre of Russia. So it's really a bit like you have you capital and surrounding territories of historic centre of a culture, vs vast break-away province, that is claiming that THEY are in charge now.

This is dumb, Ukraine's history starts on 24 August 1991 at the break up of Soviet Union. This is Wikipedia, this is not speculative. Sure there were some other countries on parts of modern Ukrainian territory, but it was never Ukraine. And there were brief inter-war periods where some independent states on the Ukrainian territory were declared, but they weren't Ukraine either. Even official propaganda says "We're young country, but with a rich history".

This means you take part of one region of your country, and give it to another region. Imagine if in US they would assign part of Nevada to California, because it's easier to manage that way. Then California declares independence from US, keeping the territory. What's not clear about that. It was a single country - hence assigning parts of it to different provinces made administrative sense.
