It's not quite as retarded as it seems, one key weakness to the Severodonetsk salient (for the Ukrainians) is that there's only a single good metalled road supplying it and if the Russians take that they'll be able to massively reduce the supplies getting through. Convoys will have to start taking more difficult dirt routes through fields where they might get bogged down.
We'll have to see how things go, at the current snails pace the Russians are making no one seriously thinks they'll actually be able to trap any troops there though.
On the whole the salient has excellent defences for the Ukrainians thanks to the river, even losing Severodonetsk won't be a major problem since they can fall back past the river. And without bridges the Russians will have to do a contested river crossing to advance from there.

As far as Ukraine is concerned, Russia and Nazis aren't all that different. Look at what Russia is doing to the Donbas citizens—forcibly recruiting them and using them as meat shields to learn firing positions. This was likely on a much larger scale during the USSR period. Plus, Russia initially sided with the nazis with the intention of eventual betrayal, but got betrayed first.
Doesn't help that communism seems to be a massive cultural sinkhole difficult to dig out of.
