Linton-on-Ouse asylum centre an 'open prison in middle of nowhere' >Villagers have branded a planned asylum centre on an ex-RAF station site an "open prison in the middle of nowhere". The Home Office wants to place up to 1,500 male asylum seekers at Linton-on-Ouse near York. Residents have flooded the prime minster and home secretary with dozens of letters opposing the proposal. The government previously said the centre would help towards saving £4.7m in hotel costs. Locals encouraged "villagers of all ages" to join a "vigorous campaign" against the plans, which they said were announced without warning. The village has a population of 1,100 according to the 2011 Census, but the Linton-on-Ouse Action Group estimated that the closure of the RAF base in 2020 reduced the figure to about 700.

Manchester Arena attack survivor finally happy and healthy >A teenager who learned to walk again after being injured in the Manchester Arena bomb has raised more than £67,000 for the hospital that saved her life. Freya Lewis was wounded in the blast on 22 May 2017. Her best friend Nell Jones, 14, was one of the 22 killed. Freya, who is now 19, said it was still "really hard" to imagine five years had gone by without Nell, but reflected on just "how far she had come" since then. "I am happy and healthy for the first time in a very long time," she added. On Sunday Freya will take part in the Greater Manchester 10k, her second charity run in the city.
Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged Islamist extremism. >The Metropolitan Police said an 18-year-old man was arrested in Essex on Wednesday on suspicion of encouraging terrorism. He remains in police custody after a warrant was granted to allow detectives to question him for a further six days. A 17-year-old girl was arrested on Friday at an address in east London. On Wednesday, a 13-year-old boy was arrested in west London on suspicion of sharing Islamist terrorist material. The force said all three arrests were made as part of a wider investigation into alleged Islamist extremism.
Trooping the Colour: Injuries as part of stand collapses >Two people have been taken to hospital after part of a stand collapsed at a Trooping the Colour event at Horse Guards Parade in central London. Scaffolding holding the stand up is reported to have given way just before 11:00 BST. London Ambulance Service (LAS) said two patients were taken to a major trauma unit as a priority. The area has been evacuated by the Army and police so safety checks can be made.
